Highlights of this cruise:
Lavrion
Lavrion (Lavrio) is a town in southeastern part of Attica, Greece and is one of the southernmost and the seat of the municipality of Lavreotiki. It is located about 60 km SE of Athens, SE of Keratea and N of Cape Sounio. Laurium is situated on a bay overlooking the island of Makronisos (ancient times: Helena) in the east.
Lavrion has a history of gold and silver mining which can be seen in its Mineralogical museum and metalworking exhibit. It is also considered a base from which to explore the nearby Cyclades Islands. The closest island is Kea which is approximately 7 km’s from Lavrion.
The port of Lavrion is changing faster than any town in Greece, opening tavernas, cafes and becoming an important ferry boat hub for the Cyclades Islands and home port for several cruise ships and sailboat companies.
Istanbul
Istanbul is Europe’s most populous city (the world’s 4th largest city proper and 20th largest urban area) and Turkey’s cultural and financial center. The city covers 27 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country.
Part of Istanbul’s great attraction is its unique position on two continents, divided by the Bosphorus. Most of the population live on the European side; the Asian sector is reached via the high-level Bosphorus Bridge, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge or by ferry. With 13 million inhabitants Istanbul offers all the excitement of a cosmopolitan city. Its numerous monuments, mosques and museums, plus the famous Grand Bazaar, make it one of the world’s great destinations.
Canakkale
Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Turkey, in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point. Çanakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait.
Çanakkale is the best base from which to visit the site of ancient Troy and the Gallipoli battlefields. There is also an interesting archological museum and the nearby village of Behramkale offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Gulf from its Acropolis. The remains of Assos, surrounding the acropolis are also worth visiting.
