Highlights of this cruise:
Osaka (Kyoto), Japan
Dating back to the fifth and sixth centuries BC, Osaka commands a pivotal role in Japan’s economy, and is the ultimate urban Japanese experience. Taste fine samples of regional cuisine such as traditional okonomiyaki, pan-fried battercake. Marvel at the staggering skyline, the shôtengai shopping arcades, and the city’s many monuments, museums and landmarks such as the National Museum of Art, the ornamental Osaka Castle, the unmistakable Umeda Sky Building, and the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, one of the best in the world. Don’t miss the lively and very flashy Dôtonbori district, alongside the canal. For a decidedly inspired change of pace, venture off to nearby Kyoto to visit one of the city’s 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Catch a glimpse of geisha fluttering down stone-paved streets, innumerable Buddhist temples, Shintô shrines and untold other hidden gems, all in the heart of Japanese culture.
Hiroshima, Japan
It is impossible to forget that this city was the first ever target of an atomic bomb, but Hiroshima has emerged from its tragedy as a vibrant and thriving community, a condition very evident during a stroll down Hondori Street, a bustling pedestrian arcade lined with shops and restaurants. A visit to Peace Memorial Park is a time for reflection; here a flame burns that is not eternal, but will be extinguished when the last nuclear weapon on earth has been destroyed. For the contemplation of scenic views, head to Miyajima, an island famed for its shrine and torii gate, both of which appear to float on the sea during high tide.
Shanghai, China
This great metropolis is a fascinating blend of East and West, past and future. Facing each other across the Huangpu River are The Bund, lined with stately colonial buildings that once housed foreign banks and trading houses, and the 21st century financial and commercial district of Pudong, where skyscrapers seem to sprout like weeds. Fortunately the core of the old Chinese city remains, with its historic gardens, temples, and teahouses. Shanghai’s first heyday began in the 1920s when it was a swinging, fast living city of jazz clubs and Western fashion. Today is its second, as it strives to surpass Hong Kong and Singapore as the economic center of Asia.
Hong Kong, China
Hong Kong is neon lights, endless shopping opportunities from street markets to high-end malls, and an unbelievably diverse array of skyscrapers, all designed with the essential input of the feng shui man. On Hong Kong Island they seem to sprout like weeds, built on landfill because of the lack of level real estate. Look down it all from The Peak, with spectacular views over the city, harbor, and mountains beyond. And do save time for a delicious Dim Sum breakfast or lunch, a mouthwatering selection of savory snacks served in bamboo baskets, and washed down with Chinese tea.
Singapore, Singapore
Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions meld in this island-state at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The site of the world’s busiest port, Singapore offers the Mustafa Centre, a 24-hour mall and Sunte, the world’s largest fountain. Play evening golf on lighted fairways; experience the nightlife on Mohamed Sultan Road; or relax at an outdoor spa. Be certain not to miss the savory seafood.
